As mean as the doglooked, I had serious doubts about that claim.After pulling the dog in towards him, the man approached the porticoand sat down on a bench to rest. He was an older gentleman who seemedpleasant enough. We made some friendly small talk, but I was a bitdisconcerted at how the dog stared at me. Thatıs when my friend finallyarrived; after she stretched out, we started our pleasant jog down thenature trail and into the woods.While jogging by myself several weeks later, I jogged past the same manand dog on the nature trail without noticing them. The dog, however,noticed me after I jogged past them, and he startled me with ferociousbarks, causing me to trip. I fell forward onto the dirt trail, badlyscrapping my hands and knees.When the dog charged at me from behind, I thought he was going toattack me, and I instinctively turned over onto my back and tried toscuttle away, pushing with my feet and using my hands and arms asleverage. As soon as the dog was upon me, I shrieked in total fear, butmy worst fear of being mauled to death never happened. I told him that I had tripped over abranch while jogging and fell; I simply felt too uncomfortable to tellhim the truth about what really happened. He accepted my story withouttoo much curiosity, and I tried my best to forget about everything thathappened. This, of course, was simply impossible as conflictingthoughts and emotions entangled my thoughts.The next morning, after my husband went to work and my kids went toschool, there was a knock at the front door, and I was absolutelysurprised to see the man from the nature park. Noticing my surprise, hequickly explained that he had followed me home the other day to makecertain that I arrived safely, and he just wanted to check on me tomake sure that I was definitely all right.I assured him I was fine and thanked him for his concern. However,seeing him again only intensified the confusion that I felt, and Ifound myself asking if the dog was okay. The man gave me a small smileand said that the dog was fine and none the worse for what happened.Then the most absurd words escaped my lips as if my brain had nocontrol over them: I asked him if I could see the dog again. One part of me thoughtthat I was making a terrible mistake and that I should not answer thedoor when he returned, but another part of me was aroused by nervousanticipation.Before I could decide what to do, the man returned with the dog, and Ifelt compelled to let him and the dog into my home. As I opened thedoor, I quickly took a few steps backwards so that the dog could notpounce on me, but the man had very tight control over the dogıs leash.The dog seemed larger and stronger than I had remembered. I reallycould not tell what sort of breed he was, but he seemed to have beenbred as either an attack dog or a fighting dog. The top of his shoulderblades reached my waist, and he easily weighed more than me. His bodywas covered with short black and brown fur that did little to concealthe appearance of strength in his muscles. Compared to my petite frame,the dog was enormous.The dog immediately recognized me, and his entire body tensed as hiseyes focused on me. He then began to yelp and whine as he struggledagainst his leash in a vain effort to reach me. At my beckoning, theman led the dog inside to the living room. The man sat in my husbandısfavorite over-stuffed chair and had the dog sit beside him on thefloor. I sat on a couch across from them.The man introduced the dog to me as Victor, and I thought that was avery unusual name for a dog. I asked the man if the dog was so namedbecause he never lost a fight with another dog or something. The mansimply said no. The reason the dog was named Victor, the man explained,was because Victor has yet to meet a woman he could not seduce.The manıs answer shocked me, and my heart fluttered as, if for thefirst time, I noticed the sexual tension between me and Victor. I askedthe man in a rather naive tone if Victor was interested in seducing me,and he simply replied with total confidence that Victor had alreadysucceed in seducing me.
