The dog, however,noticed me after I jogged past them, and he startled me with ferociousbarks, causing me to trip. I fell forward onto the dirt trail, badlyscrapping my hands and knees.When the dog charged at me from behind, I thought he was going toattack me, and I instinctively turned over onto my back and tried toscuttle away, pushing with my feet and using my hands and arms asleverage. As soon as the dog was upon me, I shrieked in total fear, butmy worst fear of being mauled to death never happened. As I opened thedoor, I quickly took a few steps backwards so that the dog could notpounce on me, but the man had very tight control over the dogıs leash.The dog seemed larger and stronger than I had remembered. I reallycould not tell what sort of breed he was, but he seemed to have beenbred as either an attack dog or a fighting dog. The top of his shoulderblades reached my waist, and he easily weighed more than me. His bodywas covered with short black and brown fur that did little to concealthe appearance of strength in his muscles. Compared to my petite frame,the dog was enormous.The dog immediately recognized me, and his entire body tensed as hiseyes focused on me. He then began to yelp and whine as he struggledagainst his leash in a vain effort to reach me. At my beckoning, theman led the dog inside to the living room. The man sat in my husbandısfavorite over-stuffed chair and had the dog sit beside him on thefloor. I sat on a couch across from them.The man introduced the dog to me as Victor, and I thought that was avery unusual name for a dog. I asked the man if the dog was so namedbecause he never lost a fight with another dog or something. The mansimply said no.
